Be The Change

The journey of true discovery is not in finding new lands
but in looking through new eyes.  -Marcel Proust

Be the Change is an opportunity for all of us to better "walk the talk." Authenticity is about remaining connected to our true nature - the character that we create for ourselves and to which we subscribe. The challenge comes in deciding whom or what it is that we wish to create.

Wake up and notice what's happening in the world. Once you decide to get involved, think about your list of options and alternatives for dealing with the situation. Take your time and choose the course of action you believe will best serve everyone involved.

If we hold fast to our anger and resentment of another, then we  perpetuate not only our own suffering, but the suffering of the person whom we hold in disdain. But by coming back to our basic goodness, and acknowledging the basic goodness of the other we can release both ourselves and the other. The choices we make now will largely determine our future and the new normal.

Down time is a chance to rethink and renew. Don’t wait - begin with just one small step and keep it up. Even small actions can build on each other but you need to take that first step. A small act of kindness creates a ripple effect that can carry from person to person, brightening many lives.

If you want to change yourself, start by making a list of things you want to change. Once you know what you'd like to improve about yourself, use the list to set specific goals to help you on your path. For example, if you want to be a nicer person, set a goal of doing two nice things for people every day.

Simple acts of kindness increases feelings of happiness and positivity. Acts of kindness create an emotional warmth, which releases a hormone known as oxytocin. Oxytocin causes the release of a chemical called nitric oxide, which dilates the blood vessels. This reduces blood pressure and, it protects the heart by lowering blood pressure.

You are one of a kind. Bring your true, authentic self to every situation, and you may find it’s just what was needed. Authenticity creates higher levels of empowerment, creativity, and overall well-being — a great place to be when helping others.

As forces beyond our control, and perhaps even our understanding, dictate our day-to-day lives, the rules and norms may change rapidly. For many of us there is an emotional grief process  in dealing with the loss of our previous lifestyle, apparently much like people who have lost a loved one. The five stages are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

In past crises, researchers find, the deepest traumas surfaced only after they had ended. Several studies have documented a reduction in crime rates in communities where at least one percent of the population practices transcendental meditation. For many, meditation is a powerful tool to bring internal peace us as individuals, but it may also benefit those around us.

Support companies that have fair trade practices and that have a triple bottom line — people, planet, and profit (not just profit). Take the time to learn about the companies where you do business. Every purchase is almost like a vote.

Amid the unprecedented outbreak of coronavirus while on the one hand, mankind is fighting against a deadly pandemic, nature, on the other hand, seems to be healing and reviving.

Recent photographs of majestic Mount Everest clearly visible from Nepal’s Kathmandu show the beauty of nature as pollution level goes down clearing the air and the sky.

Normal isn't coming back, there is a new normal: a new kind of society, a new relationship to the earth, a new experience of being human.
